Books vs Movies: Before or After

Posted January 19, 2012, under Books, Movie

So are you a before or after person? What I mean is if a book was made into a movie, which do you do first? Watch the movie or read the book?

I’ve tried it both ways and found watching the movie first works best for me. If I read the book, I’m always disappointed in the lack of details and differences in the movie. A friend of mine argued otherwise. She stated that knowing all the hidden details enriches her movie enjoyment. Neither of us can convince the other that we’re right.

For me, the book is always better than the movie. But what I find odd is I only like reading a book once, where I can watch the same movie over and over and never tire of it.

So how about you? Does it matter which order you read and watch? What are your favorite movie/book adaptations?

I always think the books are better than the movie, but I do like to watch the movie first. Although, I read the Lord Of The Rings books before the movies. I also think they did a great job keeping the movies as close to the books as they could.

I agree. Books are always better than the movies. The only one that came close was The Lord of the Rings. Good Call!

It all depends on the book/movie and how much the movie follows the book. Most the time I’ll watch the movie first to see if the book would be worth buying. That’s only because recently I haven’t had the time to read as much as I’d like. :(

I know what you mean about lack of reading time. I have so many books I want to read, but so little time.

I’m going to change my reading habits this year and get through more book in my tbr pile.

The Client by John Grisham. Also, A Time to Kill even though a large chunck was missing, the movie was still great and the chunck that was missing wasn’t necessary for the movie.

Oh, wow. I’m ashamed to say that I have not seen or read either one.

Yeah, I’m really behind on my reading!

I try never to read a book before I go to the movie, I’m almost always disappointed.

I’m with you Ella. Movie’s always first!

The only book/movie that might tie would be Lord of the Ring Brenda mentioned. They really did a great job with those movies.

I know this is an older post, but I always liked reading the book before the movies and I haven’t been able to pin-point exactly why….until now. Hands down books are better than the movies. No one can argue that, but it is a matter of which to do first. I enjoy reading the books first because I want the book to be the best experience. I don’t want to be weighed down with preconcieved notions of what the story is about or what the characters look like or what is different- I want it to be a suprise. Also, watching the movie after having read the book also can help me enjoy the movie better (insights into the movie that not everyone else knows). I would rather read a good book, than watch a good movies anyday!
