Review: Magic Without Mercy by Devon Monk

Posted July 06, 2012, under Book Review, Books, Paranormal, Urban Fantasy

So, you might have noticed that I missed a week on my book reviews. I did read the book on time, but forgot that I had a blog hop scheduled. *blush* I know. Thank goodness they sent a reminder.

But I did read a book this week…like six or seven times. Yeah, you heard me right. They are called edits. I read my book so many times in the last week, my eyes were crossing. But in the end, I finished the book and published it.

So now to the review for last week. We faced off with two urban fantasies:
Magic Without Mercy by Devon Monk vs The Mortal Bone by Marjorie M Liu

DESCRIPTION:

We knew as soon as we stepped out on those streets, we were walking blind into a war. All of us were going to bear the pain for the magic we called upon. And I was going to have to bear the pain for carrying a weapon that made me face what I had become. A killer.

Allison Beckstrom’s talent for tracking spells has put her up against some of the darkest elements in the world of magic. But she’s never faced anything like this.

Magic itself has been poisoned, and Allie’s undead father may have left the only cure in the hands of a madman. Hunted by the Authority—the secret council who enforces the laws–wanted by the police, and unable to use magic, she’s got to find the cure before the sickness spreads beyond any power to stop it.

But when a death magic user seeks to destroy the only thing that can heal magic, Allie and her fellow renegades must stand and fight to defend the innocent and save all magic…

REVIEW:

I’m a huge urban fantasy fan, so when this series was first released, I gobbled them up. And with each new book, the series just got better and better. So I’m surprised that I was a little disappointed in this book. Usually, by the first page, I’m pulled into the world and don’t surface until the book is done. Then I whine when there is no more.

Magic Without Mercy was missing something for me. I read it in one sitting, but by the end of the book, each scene felt like plan, action, plan, action. Rince and repeat. Don’t get me wrong, I loved getting to know the characters again (can we say gargoyle!), re-visiting the world, but this book was missing the sparkle I normally associate with this series. Maybe it was that Allie wasn’t as front and center with her magic as in previous books.

Will I buy the next book? Oh, most definitely.  I might even pre-order it, which I rarely do. I love these characters (I’ll say it again…gargoyle anyone?), and I love the world Mrs. Monk built. The next book, Magic for a Price, will be the last in the series and released this November. Although I’m sad to see the series end, I can’t wait to find out what happens next!

Previous books in the series:

(Absolutely love the covers…her tattoos rock!)

If you are looking for a good series, I would highly recommend trying this one.

I love the characters. The world building grows with each book. Love it!
