Review: A Curse Unbroken by Cecy Robson

The fifth and final book in the Weird Girls series came out in March. I loved the first books in the series, so of course I need to find out how things end.

DESCRIPTION:

The preternatural world is changing. After a massive magical throwdown tore apart the established order, the dark elements are rebuilding their ranks unopposed. Celia Wird’s world is changing, too. She’s the mate of the pureblood were Aric, and his Warriors are honor-bound to protect her family as she and her sisters recover from unimaginable horrors.

Celia hesitates to reveal the true extent of the Wird sisters’ trauma, but they aren’t the only ones keeping secrets: Aric and the werewolf Elders are tracking a stone that grants limitless power. So is a tough coven of witches. Then Misha, a master vampire with his own plans for the stone, sends Celia after it. Can she and the vamps beat both the weres and the witches to the treasure before it falls into the wrong hands?

Fearing for Celia’s safety, Aric begs her to stay out of the hunt. What they don’t realize is that they’re the ones being hunted. But Celia’s ready to prove that she’s not easy prey.

REVIEW:

Celia and her sisters have been through hell and back, leaving their lives in utter chaos. Friendships are broken, while new enemies are forged. Just when Celia and Aric start to put things back together, they are attacked, and a strange new affliction leaves the group at odds with each other. With the paranormal world on the brink of war, they learn a stone of limitless power can tip the balance between good and evil. As everyone scrambles to claim the stone, Celia and Aric must overcome their fears and start working together to find it first or the fragile future of their race will crumble.

I adore all the world building that went into the Weird Girls series. This book resumes right after the last book, with plenty of action and angst to keep me flipping the pages. Unfortunately, the strong characters that started the series became so eroded in the last two books, they passed beyond the point of return for me. Though I still liked them, they've been through too much. Instead of pulling them closer, they didn’t feel like friends anymore. I love the lore in this series, but it became a bit lost in all the personal drama. By the end of the book, the relationship between Aric and Celia felt rocky, the big reveal so forced, it pulled me right out of the story. So, while I was a bit disappointed in this book, there was enough magic left that I will pick up the spin-off series.
