Review: Omega: An Urban Fantasy Novel by SM Reine

I've enjoyed SM Reine's unique story telling abilities in the past. The blurb on her latest book immediately captured my attention, and I knew I had to read this new series!

Ten years ago, Deirdre Tombs died. When she was reborn the next day, Deirdre had become a shapeshifter who can’t shift shapes. Nobody knows what animal she’s supposed to be. She’s definitely not a werewolf. The Alpha, Rylie Gresham, can’t force her to transform like other members of her pack.

Now Deirdre is considered an omega, the weakest shapeshifter in the pack—a vulnerable position when Everton Stark demands tribute from Rylie. He wants to be the dominant Alpha. The only Alpha. And he plans to make her pack submit whether they want to or not. Stark can make every shapeshifter obey him by force of will alone.

Every shapeshifter except Deirdre.

The shifter who can’t shift is the only hope for Rylie to win the war against Stark. It will take everything Deirdre has to survive undercover in his den. But can an omega’s will be stronger than that of a charismatic, deadly Alpha like Everton Stark?

As a shifter who can't shift, Deirdre has been alone her whole life. When people find out that she's an Omega, they either target her or avoid her like the plague. Caught up in a rogue killing sprees, Deirdre suspects more than a loss of control is the cause. To find out the truth, she's sent undercover. But things are worse than anyone ever suspected. A new alpha has come to town, determined to claim everything as his own and destroy anyone who tries to stop him. With the power to control any shifter, he might be able to do it. Only one thing stands in his way. . .Deirdre.

Omega hooked me from the very beginning! There's something very compelling about Deirdre. As much as I liked her off-beat character, I loved the world building even more! Some of the descriptive scenes really made the book come alive. Not only were all the characters unique, the many plot twists kept me glued to the pages. Even though I enjoyed Deirdre, there were times I didn't understand her, something just a little bit off that kept me from empathizing with her completely. I'm still shocked at the slight cliffhanger ending. I was waiting for some of the characters to redeem themselves, and it didn't happen. Part of me hates the ending, while the other part of me really hopes that Mrs. Reine can fix it in the next book. I can't wait to find out what happens in book two Beta!
