Review: Possession (The Dark Rituals Book 2) by Catrina Burgess

I read the first book in The Dark Rituals series last year with mixed feelings. While I enjoyed the story and writing, I had reservations about the heroine. I hesitantly picked up book two when it became available. Despite everything, I was curious about what would happen next.

In Possession, the second installment in the Dark Rituals series, Colina must use her wits to escape from an insane asylum—and a serial killer.

Seventeen-year-old Colina Campbell had no choice but to seek the ways of the death dealers. After surviving three terrifying rituals, she’s embracing her new power—but it comes at a price. Now she must use her dark abilities to recover what she’s lost.

Colina’s quest to restore her boyfriend Luke’s spirit into a new body leads her to an insane asylum, where a brain-dead and wheelchair-bound patient named Dean becomes her target. She performs a possession spell, but it’s botched: Luke inhabits Dean’s body, but he’s only in control during the witching hour. And when Dean wakes up after an accident one night, things get seriously complicated.

Even worse? A serial killer has been murdering patients, and it looks like Colina’s his next target.

Now Colina must use her wits to root out the serial killer and escape the asylum unscathed with her loved ones in tow. Even if she makes it out alive, the nightmare’s just beginning—who knows what’s waiting for her in the darkness?

Colina thought she had lost everything when her family was brutally murdered. Then she fell in love and things became infinitely worse. After surviving three dark rituals, Colina paid a steep price…the death of her boyfriend Luke. Not willing to give him up so easily, she refused to let his spirit rest and finds another body for him to possess. Unfortunately, the body was already in use…Dean—a witch who failed to pass the dark rituals and left permanently hospitalized. To get close to him, Colina committed herself to the insane asylum. While she tried to rescue Luke, Colina found herself falling for Dean. And she will need both Luke and Dean if she had any hope of escaping a serial killer who has been using the asylum as his own personal playground.

The story began a bit shaky for me, but I must confess, I was sucked in all the same. I enjoyed the unique writing, and loved the twists and turns. I had no idea where the book was heading. I enjoyed learning of Colina's power with her. I even enjoyed the secondary characters, both the good guys and the villains. While the story was deliciously dark, the last few pages of the book just ruined it for me. All the progress the heroine made during the whole book just vanished. I felt betrayed and very frustrated, and took off a whole star because of it. The ending felt orchestrated by the author to get readers to pick up the next book. Unfortunately, no matter how much I enjoyed the writing and how curious I am how the series would end, I will not be finishing this series at this time. Maybe later, after I had a time to forget my frustration.
