Review: A Promise of Fire (The Kingmaker Chronicles) by Amanda Bouchet

I'll admit it was the gorgeous cover of A Promise of Fire that caught my attention, but I jumped in with both feet when I read the blurb. Action. Adventure. Romance. Fantasy. *squee*

Catalia “Cat” Fisa lives disguised as a soothsayer in a traveling circus. She is perfectly content avoiding the danger and destiny the Gods—and her homicidal mother—have saddled her with. That is, until Griffin, an ambitious warlord from the magic-deprived south, fixes her with his steely gaze and upsets her illusion of safety forever.

Griffin knows Cat is the Kingmaker, the woman who divines the truth through lies. He wants her as a powerful weapon for his newly conquered realm—until he realizes he wants her for much more than her magic. Cat fights him at every turn, but Griffin's fairness, loyalty, and smoldering advances make him increasingly hard to resist and leave her wondering if life really does have to be short, and lived alone.

Cat Fisa has been on the run, hiding from her past, fighting not only for her freedom but her very life. When she first spotted Griffin, she knew he was trouble, but she could never have guessed the extent he would go to possess her. Despite all her resolve to keep her distance, she finds herself falling for the annoyingly handsome, obstinate, hard-headed bastard. Cat must learn to trust, risk revealing her deepest, darkest secrets or lose the only thing that mattered to her—not the freedom that she held so dear as she expected, but the one who captured her heart…Griffin!

I will preface my review by saying this was one of the best books I've read this year! The originality completely sold me on A Promise of Fire. I loved the combination of action, adventure and fantasy, but when you add romance into the mix, I was a goner! Griffin is a clever tactician, loyal down to his bones, an alpha through and through, and a total ass to Cat. On the other hand, Cat didn't make her time in captivity pleasant…good for her! I adored the interaction between the two of them, the humor of watching these two hard souls fall totally and irrevocably in love with each other was fantastic. The only detraction that stopped me from giving this five stars was Cat's secret wasn't much of a mystery, but no one figured it out. Griffin was no slouch…he should've guessed at some point in the book. Despite that, I thoroughly enjoyed not only the characters, but the addicting storyline as well—even with the slight cliff-hanger ending. I can't wait for book two!

Thank you for this recommendation! It was absolutely gorgeous. I couldn’t put it down which was most needed considering I have been in a reading rut. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
